Life Is Worth Swimming

Fin-Alholics Anonymous

I admit it. I am addicted to fins. So I have decided to help other fin-aholics (I know you are out there) by creating these 12 steps to an aquatic life free from fins:

  1. We admitted we were powerless over fins, that our workouts had become unmanageable.
  2. Came to believe that a Power greater than our bare feet could restore us to sanity.
  3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of our coach, as we understood him.
  4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of our swimming equipment.
  5. Admitted to our coach, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.Fin Alholics Anonymous by Gary Hall Sr.
  6. Were entirely ready to have our coach remove all these defects of equipment.
  7. Humbly asked our coach to remove our short fins, too.
  8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed, particularly those we crushed in practice who were not wearing fins, and became willing to make amends to them all.
  9. Made direct amends to such people at every pool possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
  10. Continued to take personal inventory of our swimming equipment and when we sneaked fins back into our mesh bag, promptly admitted it.
  11. Sought through yoga and visualization to improve our conscious contact with our coach, as we understood him, asking only for knowledge of his will for us to be able to swim finless without sinking.
  12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to fin-aholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

Who knows, maybe we need to start bodysuitaholics anonymous as well.

loved the fin-alholics notes! I love to swim with fins in workouts at Sun City, and when I visit my old hometown in Luray, Va. I especially love to use fins in the Shenandoah River in summers. It s better than a boat, which takes expensive gas, etc.

I would be interested to know for what type of swimming you use fins mostly in your workouts. Do you use them for better fitness, mainly fast swimming (at or over race pace) or regular kicking? Also do you use different kind of fins for the open water and pool swimming?

  • Andreas

I use fins at most for fast swimming. I like the Churchill Makapu and the PDF’s (for breaststroke). I also use fins for technique work to maintain a better body position during some drills as well as during some longer aerobic swimming sets to maintain a little bit more speed and a better body position and sometimes during kick sets.

The PDF fins aren’t real breaststroke fins? Think I already used them a long time ago and thought they felt a bit weird at first.

  • Andreas

Nico, you’re right. The PDF’s are not real breaststroke fins. When I used them for the first time it felt really weird. You have to turn your feet inward during the propulsive phase of the kick. The more you can do that, the more pressure you get on your feet during the kick. You have to work with slower swimming or kicking at first.

Did you ever try the “real” breaststroke fins … I think they were by Speedo? I did and thought they were pretty good but hard to get used to and probably not used right by a non breaststroker as I am. What I like best for breaststroke with fins is using regular ones and a snorkel trying to stay “flat” using fly kicks for either long glide or high rhythm work.

  • Andreas

No, I’ve never tried them. I couldn’t find them in Germany and didn’t want to order them online in another country. I also use Zoomers or a Shooter monofin for breaststroke with one fly kick per stroke.

As a life long Swimmmer , I was generaly a poor kicker. Today I am closing in on 50 years old and in practices I am addicted to fins: I use a short cuttoff Finis fin; I love the feel of the “easy speed” and extra burn in the legs after pracices.

As a Coach I like to use the same fin to help the kids with body position in drills. Now having had a RACE CLUB experience We have found other great applications to improve the swimmer’s speed by developing faster stroke counts.

All the Best in your swimming,
    Greg

A fin that is gaining a reputation is “dafins” or duh fins. It is lightweight, radical design and gives you lots of power more than any other fin that I have used. Its the bomb for body or bogey board surfing and awesome for fast swimming.

    • http://www.aquadonis.ch Nico Messer

I heard about that fin and will try to get my hands on a pair. The PDF fins were kind of the predecessor of “dafins” and I did like those.
